The Artists
Mohammed Harb
Mohammed was born and raised in Gaza City to parents originally from Gaza. He holds a BA in Fine Arts from An-Najah National University, Nablus, West Bank, received in 2001. He is an interdisciplinary artist, working mainly with painting and video art, and has directed several award-winning documentary films.
At the beginning of the genocide, in October 2023, Mohammed lost his entire Al-Rimal neighborhood. Yet, the deepest tragedy was the loss of his twin sister, along with her daughter, her son, her daughter-in-law, and baby grandson. Mohammed had to recollect his strength to protect his family and move them to a safer shelter, a tent in Deir al-Balah, where they stayed until February 2025, when they returned to their partially destroyed home. Despite the pain, starvation, and constant attempts to protect one another, Mohammed was wounded in an airstrike in mid-July 2026.
Mohammed has always been involved in organizing art workshops and projects, especially in video art, connecting besieged Gaza with the rest of the world. In 2022, he established Gaza Arts Gallery, and in February 2025, together with some fellow artists, under the shadow of the genocide, they initiated the Artists’ Shelter to provide a safe and supportive environment for young artists to nurture their skills and develop their artistic practices.
My Story in a Tent, digital photography print, 12” x 18”, 2024
Mohammed captures the Palestinian reality and survivacne through his various artistic practices, including documentary photography and filmmaking, colorful expressionistic painting, and abstract conceptual video. His artworks reflect the absurdity and harshness of living conditions in Gaza through consecutive wars, siege, and the recent genocide, while presenting the persistence and creativity of the Gazan people to continue living with dignity and abundance.
The series My Story in a Tent documents the daily life of Mohammed and his family in their tent. There are no longer schools, workplaces, or homes, nor even a kitchen or a bed. Yet, within this confined space, life continues and everyday is re-created: they beautify themselves, cook, pray, study, play, and spend their days together.
