The Artists

Mohamed Abusal

Mohamed was born in Gaza to parents originally from Iraq Manshiya village and a mother originally from Jaffa. He co-founded the Gaza Contemporary Art collective Eltiqa (2002), received the Charles Aspry Prize for Contemporary Art (2005), participated in the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris (2011), and received a Camargo foundation fellowship in Cassis (2016).

While preparing to go to school on October 7, 2023, Mohamed and his family were shocked by the sound of missiles and intensive explosions. Within hours, they had to leave their home in Al-Bureij refugee camp, marking the beginning of continuous displacement and suffering. They moved from one relative’s house to another, living in crowded rooms with severe shortages of water and food. After escaping death more than once amid relentless bombardment and losing his home, studio, and all his artworks, he persisted in his effort to protect his family and find a way to flee to Egypt, finally managing to leave after seven months.

Mohamed received a grant from the Institute for Research and Studies on the Arab and Muslim Worlds (IREMAM) and the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (MUCEM), which facilitated his travel to Marseille, France in September 2024, where he currently lives with his family.

Lament for my Garden, watercolor on paper, 13.8” x 10.6”, 2026 | acrylic and watercolor on paper, 16.5” x 11.6”, 2026

Mohammed describes this collection: “We are like a cactus uprooted from its roots... forcibly taken to a distant place... and placed in a cramped pot... barely surviving... a part of us withers and a new bud sprout... those who did not die... their branches were broken... we gather together, steadfast, hoping to sprout anew.”

Humanitarian Influx, ink on paper, 70” x 8.3”, 2026

In this drawing, Mohamed reflects on the memory of people rushing to obtain a bag of flour. For some, this humanitarian influx represented an attempt to save themselves and their families from forced starvation; for others, it became a path toward martyrdom, as Israeli snipers fired on the crowd.
